Resume Tips: Headings - Experience

August 29, 2005

Dear ,

The “Experience” section of your resume is the heart and soul of most resume formats. This section presents your career experience, organized in the context of each company where you have worked .  Hiring managers look at your experience to determine whether to continue reading your resume.  The following guidelines will help you complete the “Experience” resume heading successfully.

Experience – Using the Chronological Resume Format
The most commonly used resume format is called the “Chronological” resume. This format lists your experience in reverse chronological order, starting with your most recent experience. The Pongo ResumeBUILDER will automatically sort your experiences for you (saving you time and effort).  However, you can choose to do a manual sort by selecting the “preferences” button at the top right of the screen.

Key Information

The key information you should enter for each position includes: employment beginning and ending dates, company name, location (city, state) and position title.  Be sure to also include the industry for each company, using the description box.  Pongo's resume creation software organizes position-specific information for you. Focus on describing your experience in each job; we do the rest of the work to create a professional resume by automatically placing each position in the proper chronological order.

Hooks of Interest

Information in your resume is similar to baiting a fishing hook. Companies “bite” on different elements, so you want to have as many hooks as possible in your resume. For example, a resume reader may be interested in you because of your industry experience, the college you attended, or software you have used. Give yourself the best opportunity to catch the company's interest by including multiple “hooks of interest” in your resume.

Resume hooks include:

Position,
such as a title you held;
Products you worked with;
Industries you worked in;
Tools used in your job, including such software as MSWord, MSExcel, and databases;
Technologies you worked with (most applicable in highly technical jobs); and
Accomplishments you delivered or results you achieved.

Action Words
These words usually end with the letters “ed”. Using this type of word to begin a sentence conveys action and accomplishment to the reader. Below are a few sample action words.

achieved, adapted, analyzed, administered, audited calculated, collaborated, composed, conducted, constructed contracted, converted, coordinated, conceived
demonstrated, designed, developed, discovered, drafted edited, eliminated, established, evaluated forecasted, formed, founded, formulated
generated, guided implemented, improved, increased, insured, interpreted, invented maintained, managed, marketed, mediated, monitored, maximized

Minimize Use of “I” and “Me”
Minimize or eliminate the use of words such as “I” and “me”. When you first start writing your resume you might include these pronouns. Simply reorganize the sentences to eliminate them. Research has shown that it's more professional to write your resume in a manner that minimizes the use of these pronouns.

mple:
Original Sentence:
I managed a sales staff of 20 and I was able to reduce overhead 30%.

Reorganized Sentence
Managed a growing sales staff of 20 skilled sales professionals.  Achieved increased productivity and reduced overhead 30%.
