References are the most common form of background checking that companies perform. In this situation, companies request the names of three previous employers they can call to learn more about you. Previous co-workers are also used as references.

You should contact all your references before releasing their contact information. This gives you a chance to alert the reference to the upcoming call. You also want to be certain that your references will give you a positive recommendation.

Pre-Qualify References
Pre-qualify all your references by asking each of them the following question.
"Are you comfortable providing me with a stellar reference?" If they are uncomfortable giving you a strong reference, don't use them.

Prepare References
Before releasing your references, prepare each reference to receive the call by describing the position you are considering, the company, and the name of the person who will be contacting them.

Also, be sure to tell each reference that you're interested in this position and thank him or her for taking the time to assist you. Also ask how best to reach them during the following few days and relay this information to the company.

It is recommended you supply a list of references after you have completed the first round of interviews and the company has expressed strong interest in you.
