Your professional Objective is like the first sentence of a short story.  Its purpose is to orient the resume reader to your goals and talents, as well as capture their attention.

Deciding to include an objective on your resume is determined by whether or not you're pursuing a position similar to the job you had most recently or not. An objective is not required if you're seeking a position similar to your most recent or current position. Without an objective, resume readers assume you are seeking a position similar to your most recent job.

When you're seeking a career change or a position different from your most recent job, you should include an objective to communicate your desired position.

Length
An objective should be specific and short. It should include a descriptive position title you're seeking and possibly your targeted industry.

Your objective should be no longer that two lines and positioned as the first resume heading. The more concise it is, the more likely it will be read. Using a very general objective does not communicate anything to the reader, so state an objective that is meaningful and succinct.

Examples
The following is an example of an ineffective objective that does not communicate anything meaningful.

"Seeking a position that utilizes my diverse experience and talents to deliver meaningful results."

An effective objective might read as follows.

“Seeking a position as a customer service representative in the financial services or investment industry”.

The above objective tells the reader the position and industry you are targeting.

Use the Objective heading on your resume effectively. Help the resume reader rapidly understand what you are seeking and compel him or her to read more about you.
