Does Your Job Fit Your Zodiac Sign?

January 17, 2011 (11:15AM) by Rick Saia, CPRW

Has your astrological sign ever impacted what career or jobs you've chosen? Or your job search? Maybe it's worth a second look.

As you may have heard, astronomers at the Minnesota Planetarium Society announced last week that the signs of the Zodiac are all wrong. They say our understanding of the Zodiac is off by about a month, meaning people have been identifying themselves with the wrong signs.

With that news, I realized I've been thrust into an astrological identity crisis. The horror!

The table below shows the society's alternate Zodiac and the Zodiac signs as we've known them.

ALTERNATE ZODIAC  ZODIAC AS WE'VE KNOWN IT
Capricorn: Jan. 20 - Feb. 16  Aquarius:  Jan. 20 - Feb. 18
Aquarius:  Feb. 16 - March 11  Pisces:  Feb. 19 - March 20
Pisces:  March 11 - April 18  Aries:  March 21 - April 19
Aries:  April 18 - May 13  Taurus:  April 20 - May 20
Taurus:  May 13 - June 21  Gemini:  May 21 - June 20
Gemini:  June 21 - July 20  Cancer:  June 21 - July 22
Cancer: July 20 - Aug. 10  Leo:  July 23 - Aug. 22
Leo:  Aug. 10 - Sept. 16  Virgo:  Aug. 23 - Sept. 22
Virgo:  Sept. 16 - Oct. 30  Libra:  Sept. 23 - Oct. 22
Libra:  Oct. 30 - Nov. 23   Scorpio:  Oct. 23 - Nov. 21
Scorpio: Nov. 23-29  Sagittarius:  Nov. 22 - Dec. 21
Ophiuchus:  Nov. 29 - Dec. 17  Capricorn:  Dec. 22 - Jan. 19
Capricorn:  Dec. 17 - Jan. 20

A week ago, I was clearly a Sagittarian, which, according to the web site Divine Caroline, means I'm ethical, full of energy, and philosophical. I'm also an excellent decision-maker and can be a fair and easygoing boss (if I were one). It also said some of the best jobs for Sagittarians are editor (Yes!), public relations professional (can do), and coach (done that).

But according to the alternate Zodiac, I'm on the cusp of being either a Scorpio or an Ophiuchus, which is a 13th constellation the ancient Babylonians tossed from their calendar because they only wanted 12. (I guess they were easy to please.)

According to Divine Caroline, Scorpios are described as intense (ummm, no), and the best jobs for them are detective, lawyer, educator, scientist, surgeon, or physicist. Ophiuchus, meanwhile, represents a man wrestling a serpent. And where might they fit in the working world? As doctors of medicine or science. They also seek higher education and enlightenment.

Well, I couldn't take the idea of attending law school or medical school, and the only thing that resonates with me is educator, since I teach part-time.

I remain clearly a Sagittarian, and astrologers say that despite what the Minnesota group says, I will always be one because nothing changes for those who follow the Tropical Zodiac (as most of us Westerners do), because it’s fixed to seasons. (Phew!)

Does your chosen career or current job fall within the description of people born under your astrological sign? Check out Divine Caroline, then tell us in a comment below.

No wonder why I'm such a different individual, they have had my Zodiac messed up this entire time! Ha ha, I went from being a Scorpio to a Libra and I fall directly in between the two. My work environment reflects that as well. Interesting stuff.

@ Seth -- Thanks for the comment. So, maybe the astronomers are right? At least partially?

Not sure this would apply to me, as I would still be a Leo. {I am Leo...hear me roar!}...interesting nonetheless.... "Leos possess spontaneity and ingenuity and do well when encouraged to lead instead of follow. Best jobs: CEO, performer, tour guide, real estate agent, interior decorator, fashion designer, government, salesperson". (Well, I've done the salesperson job anyhow. Tour guide? Interesting. Performer...hmmm, people have said I should of been a comedian. No government for me, and definitely not a fashionista).

@ Cindy -- Looks like Leo suits you well. As for being a comedian, there is value in making people laugh even if you don't get paid for it. Thanks for dropping by!

Cancer to Gemini? I've always felt the nurturing aspect of Cancer most accurately describes who I am. Reiki training has supported this aspect but trying to create a career utilizing Reiki has eluded me as I'm more concerned with sharing the healing energy than capitalizing on it. I have been an Engineering Lab Tech for 20+ years before the company moved production to a different state. After earning my BS in Behavioral Science, I am finding my lack of experience in the field to be a major roadblock in beginning this next phase of my life. Finances seem to be pushing me back into manufacturing just to keep our chins above the financial flood waters. AAARRRGGGHHHH!!!!

@ Donne -- I can sense your frustration since money can be a seemingly insurmountable barrier when you want to make a career change into something you feel may suit you better. I've always believed that everyone should have a career "Plan B" and put it into practice in some way, either part time or on a volunteer basis. There may come a day when Plan B becomes Plan A. Thoughts?

Rick, Earning my BS was plan B! Guess I need a Plan C huh? Guess that would explain my frustrations. Right now I feel so stuck I can't even come up with another plan.

@ Donna -- I wouldn't despair. Can you find people who work in and around jobs that you're targeting with your new degree? They may be able to advise you - and even help you - how to break into the field with your qualifications.

I'm sorry to say I don't know anyone in the field as my life focused on my previous job. Unfortunately, I don't live close to any organizations to volunteer to gain experience and meet folks working the jobs I'm interested in. Plus my husband isn't excited about the expenses I would create as a volunteer. Donna

Interesting assessment. I'm also a Sagittarius. My goal is to become a screenwriter, even though I have worked on my different types of projects.

Sagittarius's are supposed to be creative. Decision making may represent an issue. It seems we have to make many mistakes before succeeding. Great article.

@Donna,

Create a website and write about your behavioral science program. Monetize the website to make revenue. Use social networking to increase traffic.

Try to gain additional skills in your fields such as certifications. If you can find a position due to lack of experience, then put your education to work to make revenue. Good luck.
