Last Day to Update Your Resume!

September 29, 2010 (12:40PM) by Brianna Raymond, CPRW

Update your resumeJust kidding! Today is really just the last day of our Update Your Resume Month giveaway, when a simple Tweet can win you a month of unlimited Pongo services and a free resume critique. You have until 5pm ET to enter! (Here’s how it works.)

And according to our poll that asked "When was the last time you updated your resume?", a full 43% of voters waited until they started searching for a new job to update their resumes, and another 42% can't even remember the last time they did!

So, to conclude this month-long observance, I want to leave you with some tips on updating your resume. Pay special attention to these elements before you send your resume to potential employers:

Education: If you've been out of school for more than a few years, remove any mentions of GPA, class rank, and student activities. Instead, include the following: Graduation year, degree, name of college or university, and the city and state it's located in. For more help, check out this blog post dedicated to helping you write the education section of your resume.

Objective: Unless you're entry-level, switching careers, or re-entering the workforce after an extended absence, you need to ditch the objective and replace it with a Professional Summary. This section can be the most difficult to write, so turn to this guide to help you craft your own Professional Summary.

Contact Information: This is a no-brainer; Make sure your mailing address, telephone number, and email address are all current.

Ideally, you should examine each word of your resume and alter it as needed. This includes reviewing past experience and accomplishments, as well as adding new ones.

As always, if you need help with any part of your resume, leave your question in a comment below!
