August 18, 2010 (2:15PM) by Brianna Raymond, CPRW

Are you unemployed and actively looking for a job? Or maybe you're employed but desperately looking for a way out of the job you hate. How about employed and casually keeping an eye open for new opportunities?

Find a jobWhatever your reason for job searching, I want to know how you do it.

Job search strategies can vary widely depending on your personal situation, your industry, the type of job you're seeking, and the kinds of pressures forcing you into the job market. Just as the strategies vary, the methods you use to execute your strategies could also be different.

Here's a list of all the common methods you could be using (and maybe already are) to find your next paying gig:

Experts say the most successful job search (you know, the one that ends with a job!) utilizes more than one method. So tell us: How are YOU job searching? Tell us which of the above methods you're using and how well they're working.

I've been reaching out to old coworkers in my field and using job boards. Had an interview set up through a friend but that job fell through. Back to the drawing board.

I am attempting to get a Civil Service job. I am on five different Civil Service lists, four for Erie County and one for New York State. I am on two Civil Service lists for the entire County, one for a Clerk Typist position and another one for a Senior Clerk Typist position. I am, also, on two more Civil Service lists for the County, for the Erie County Medical Center Corporation, only. I am, also, on a list for New York State for an entry level clerical position. I have gone on several different interviews, for those positions, since May 0f 2010.

I think how you search depends a lot on age. I find myself, after 6 years, out on the street. BUT, I am close to possible retirement also. That means I am far more selective this time. I am not so much anxious to get a paycheck coming in as finding a job I want and will enjoy. For example, I like some travel. I am a Business Development Director. I am NOT just a Salesperson at this stage in my career. I MAKE deals happen thru speeches, presentations, personal contact, tradeshows, negotiation, advertising, social media, and networking thru friends I have built up for years.

What I am not looking for is a stupid quota job, or "hard charging bull-nosed grunt". Been there and paid my dues. I have 25 years of quality experience and results. So, if the right job does not come along that is just fine. If the right job does come I am ready for it!!

I joined a few major job boards, including Career Builder. I have search results sent to a specific email for job searching and check the email regularly. I joined a smaller job board, InDeed, and also have search updates emailed to the same email address. I found a few posts on this board that were of interests and have applied, but no results yet. I have searched places I would like to work on line for job openings. I have found several postings and applied. I have been doing some volunteer work in my field to meet other professionals and stay in touch with events in my field of study. In volunteering I hope to show the agency I am a hard worker who is dependable and maybe when they have an opening or hear of an opening I'll be considered.
