$500 Holiday Giveaway: Nominate Your Favorite Charity!

December 09, 2009 (1:30PM) by Team Pongo

Holiday giveawayIt's that time of year again—the time to make our holiday charity donations! And we're asking you to help us select which charities Pongo will contribute to. Our very first giveaway was December 2008, when we selected one reader-submitted charity to receive a $250 donation. This year, we're doubling the prize and donating $250 to two charities of your choice!

Last year's winning charity was submitted by reader Victoria, who nominated Camp Heartland/One Heartland, a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of children, youth, and their families who are impacted by HIV/AIDS and other significant life challenges.

Now, here's your chance to tell us which charities you think we should donate to this year. All you have to do is follow the rules below:

Prizes
Two reader-nominated charities will each receive $250.

How to Enter
In the "Post a Comment" section below, fill in your Name and E-Mail, then tell us:

  1. The name of your charity (a verifiable non-profit organization)
  2. The charity's web site (or physical address) and telephone number
  3. A brief description of what the charity benefits or supports

Don't worry! Your e-mail address will not be posted on the site and we never spam!

Contest Dates
Begins today (Wednesday, December 9, 2009) and ends at 5 pm EST on Wednesday, December 16, 2009. The winners will be selected using random.org. We'll announce the winners in a follow-up blog post on Friday, December 18, 2009.

This non profit group rescues horses from slaughter, abuse, neglect and abandonment as well as has an ongoing education outreach program to the local community.

Not only are local horses effected but people in other countries are effected by eating carcinogenic horse meat that they may not be aware of being unhealthy.

The horses need a Happy Holiday too!

I nominate Second Chance Youth Ranch (2CYR.) Second Chance Youth Ranch, or 2CYR, is a ranch that provides a loving home for displaced, abandoned or troubled teens that have been placed in the foster care system. The vision of 2CYR is to reunite families whenever possible by giving parents and teens the training needed to come back together and be successful. With multiple homes on site, each bunk house has a set of fulltime house parents and can hold up to 12 teens at a time. There are currently three bunk houses and an emergency shelter for those who need immediate placement. Teens who are placed there receive academic tutoring, mentoring, individual counseling as well as family counseling and other life skills. Many who have been placed there have decided to stay till graduation and go on to college. Second Chance Youth Ranch is so much more than just a foster facility; it is a family for many who have no family and who need a Second Chance in life. Second Chance Youth Ranch truly cares for teenagers; spirit, soul and body.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society:

I have personally seen how this non-profit saves lives, educates, and offers support to those dealing with the horrors associated with blood cancers.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services. LLS's mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. I have loved animals all my life and when I want to give money to charity I pick animals over humans every time. There is too much cruelty out there, and too many people think animals don't have emotion and don't feel pain. They are helpless when they are loyal to and dependent on their human caregivers. It's so sad.

In TNT we raise funds, help people achieve goals they thought they could only dream of such as training for and completing marathons, half-marathons, triathlons, century bike rides and hikes. We also raise cancer awareness and bring hope to cancer patients and their families. These people are the real heroes on our team, and we need your support to cross the ultimate finish line - a cure!

This is why I will train for a marathon. Completing a Marathon requires a lot of training, you can't just phone that in and I will do so through the cold winter days and the temptations of the holidays. Any of my sacrifices won't be even close to what millions of cancer patients (especially children) and their families all around the world go through every single day.

The Somaly Mam Foundation http://www.somaly.org/ (917)-388-9623

This organization was founded by a woman named, Somaly Mam, who became a victim of sex trafficking at age 14. (She was sold into prostitution). Years after getting out of sexual slavery, she created this organization to help rescue and support victims, create awareness on the injustice, and push toward ending slavery.

Today, the sex trafficking industry generates $12 billion dollars a year and is often protected by corrupt government, which makes it such a difficult industry to tackle.

According to the foundation's site, 2-4 million young women and children will be sold into prostitution in the next 12 months.

Please help The Leukemia & Lymphoma help fight blood cancers! www.lls.org, (310 342-5800 / Local GLA Chapter). Every ten minutes, someone dies from a blood cancer. This statistic represents nearly 146 people each day, or more than six people every hour. Leukemia causes more deaths than any other cancer among children and young adults under the age of 20. In general, the likelihood of dying from most types of leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma decreased from 1996 to 2005 (the most recent data available). We have to keep fighting!

What better charity to honor than one that inspires and gives hope through a direct connection of a Leukemia survivor's story.

The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS) has educated, brought awareness and directly inspired me as a volunteer to help raise money to fund research and direct care initiatives for blood cancer patients.

Our honored teammates (survivors) have run alongside me, sharing their challenges and successful outcomes and how they have been directly impacted by the money raised by LLS. The best charity to support in my eyes is one that helps save lives!!! Please consider LLS as one of your honored charity recipients!!! 310-342-5800 phone

For many of our families the financial hardship begins quickly and for others it is after the domino effect of extra costs and lost wages. At whatever stage they are in when they contact OFR we are committed to doing all we can to support these families because it is our responsibility as American citizens, the heart of OFR is exactly what makes America great…we know that our Freedoms are not free and we are committed to those who make those freedoms possible.

I nominate St. Louis Learning Disabilities Association. They are the only organization of their kind in the St. Louis area.

St. Louis LDA offers help for children with learning disabilities, as well as their families, teachers and schools. They offer scholarships for children who otherwise could not afford the services they need to overcome their learning disability.

The amazing thing is that kids with a learning disability are not "stupid," in fact they test as high or higher than average. Their disability is standing in the way of their brain's ability to learn. The St. Louis L.D.A. unlocks the magic of learning for these kids, helping them to be good students and productive adults.

This group relies on donations and the need is greater than ever before.

The NSAIE works in partnership with the National AmeriCorps VISTA Program and Tribes, Tribal organizations, Native non-profits and Native organizations throughout the Nation to help secure resources for Native Elders.

Due to limited resources only 5% of the eligible American Indian, Alaska Native and (other) Native Elderly in the United States receive services. This percentage is made even more significant by the fact that over 27% of American Indian elders live at or below the poverty level, three times the national average.

Elderly Services Programs in tribal communities provide the following services to their Elders:

1. Congregate and home delivered meals 2. Transportation 3. Health screening 4. In-home health services 5. Education services 6. Social activities 7. In-home support services 8. Information and referral

The funding from the NSAIE supplements the core operating funds for these programs, which allows the elder programs to use funding in ways that meet the greatest needs of their elders while respecting their culture and traditions.

The National AmeriCorps VISTA Program sites are currently located in Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Guam, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Washington and Wisconsin. Additional locations are anticipated.

Our motto is "Nothing But Good Shall Come from It." ~ from the oral narrative of the origin of the peace pipe as transcribed from Black Elk, Oglala Sioux Holy Man, Black Elk Speaks, (University of Nebraska Press, 1932). The NSAIE is a non-profit organization. To learn more about our organization, visit www.nsaie.org. We welcome you to become a fan thru Facebook.

We anticipate Pongo's selection of our organization to receive the contribution of $250 to help our cause. Pongo.com is an excellent reference source in helping our AmeriCorps VISTA members prepare for the workforce upon successful completion of their year of service. Thanking Pongo.com in advance, we remain grateful for those who chose to serve our great country and the tribal elders who hold the wisdom.

This charity provides love and support to our service men and women serving abroad who might not otherwise receive gifts and letters from home. Each month, participating members across the state of Minnesota gather to assemble packages of small items that may include such things as toothpaste, playing cards, snacks, etc. The packages are mailed, along with a heartfelt letter, to the soldiers. Although the participating members purchase the items that are sent, the cost of postage to send multiple packages each month is very costly. Mercy Homes for Boys and Girls helps young children who have been living in abusive situations, been thrown out of their homes, or have nowhere else to go. They provide a loving environment in which to grow both physically and emotionally. Many of these children have never known kindness or the love of a famliy. These children are given the opportunity for an education which can open the door to a new productive life. Without Mercy Homes these children would never have known that there is a better life possible for them.

Spread some of the money through Kiva.org. You'll be able to see the difference your money makes in the people's lives.

As they pay you back for your loan, you can give the money out to new people. There's no need to limit your holiday giving to one time of the year.

I would like to nominate the Pets and Women's Shelters (PAWS) Program (http://www.americanhumane.org/human-animal-bond/programs/pets-and-womens-shelters/; 1-800-227-4645).

PAWS guides domestic abuse emergency shelters toward permitting residents to bring their pets with them when they leave a violent situation. Sometimes when a person is abused, the pets may suffer at the hands of the abuser as well. Women may stay in the situation because they cannot take their pets if they leave, or be forced to leave their pets behind. The PAWS Program works to keep people and pets together in a time when they need each other the most.

My nomination is for Convoy of Hope. Convoy of Hope does amazing work in the United States and abroad. The organization provides lasting relief to individuals, families and communities in need.

They do a tremendous amount of disaster relief state side and abroad. Convoy of Hope was in 11 different states providing relief from disasters in 2008 alone. They not only bring in crews and supplies during clean up, but they stay to help rebuild and reestablish.

Recently, Convoy of Hope had teams responding to disasters in 4 different countries. The Georgia (USA) floods, the typhoon in the Philippines, the tsunami in the Samoa Islands, and the earthquake in Indonesia. In these places Convoy of Hope provided food, water, clothing, sleeping mats, etc to individuals in these communities. Not only did they meet their immediate needs, but they also set up water purification units to continue to provide clean water to communities who otherwise had none.

They also do communities outreaches outside of disaster relief for families and communities who are simply victims of hard times. At these events Convoy of Hope provides services like hair cuts, manicures, family portraits, groceries, clothing and resume building.

The amazing thing about Convoy of Hope is the passion of the people who work there. Everyone, without exception, associated with Convoy of Hope has a heart for helping those who are hurting. Convoy of Hope is not just an organization, it is an army of compassion, fighting against any force necessary to "provide real help and lasting hope to people in need."

That is why Convoy of Hope is my nomination.

We are 501(c)(3). We take in all Bostons from kill shelters all around the Houston area, including the very sick, the old, the maimed. We have foster families (about 40 presently) & our founder, Karen Toupard, has donated a garage kennel which is fantastic. We have need for money to convert the balance of the house (from the separated garage) into additional kenneling - particularly for dogs who are ill & those who have had recent surgery (including spay & neuter - a requirement for ALL our dogs before they are placed.) We have been in existance for approximately 10 years & we are STRICTLY volunteer - there are NO paid employees. The physical address is secret to protect the dogs in the kennel. I am an attorney by trade & a volunteer by desire & can be reached at 713-222-1220. Thank you for your consideration.

Please make a donation to the American Cancer Society through Relay For Life of Murrieta. The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. I nominate Blue Ridge Boxer Rescue. Just in the first two years it has existed, BRBR rescued, vetted, and found permanent homes for over 1,000 boxers and boxer mixes. ONE FOUNDATION

http://www.onefoundation.cn/en_index.php

The “Red Cross Society of China Jet Li One Foundation Project” (Jet Li One Foundation) was founded by Red Cross ambassador Jet Li, under a strategic partnership with the Red Cross Society of China. The Jet Li One Foundation Project works independently to pursue its charitable mission and agenda.

The foundation believes that: “1 person + 1 dollar/yuan + 1 month = 1 big family”. If each person donates at least one dollar/yuan each month, our individual donations can be transformed into a much greater fund. When we combine our charitable strength, we can make sure that the most vulnerable members of our global family will receive the help they need.

Embodying the Red Cross’ spirit of humanity and philanthropy, we believe that in helping others we will also find our own happiness. Starting in China, our goal is to build a sustainable, professional, and trustworthy foundation platform to encourage social sector development and bring out mass participation in philanthropic giving and volunteerism.

Wisconsin Literacy

Wisconsin Literacy is a statewide organization that provides advocacy, resources, and support to the many adult, family, and workplace literacy programs that exist across Wisconsin. I had the privilege of working with them for three years, and the efforts that they put forth allow local organizations to expand literacy programming. Wisconsin Literacy truly changes lives by giving learners a gift that will enable them to gain better employment, navigate the healthcare system, and break the generational cycle of illiteracy.

CCE is a wonderful organization for local youth that fosters creative expression through the arts as well as works with area middle schools to develop programs to help keep at risk students in school. CCE teaches dance, drumming, music production, creative writing, visual arts and nutrition. They also sponsor financial aid nights and job preparation seminars. 86% of students that attend the center do so for free and as the economy continues to decline, grant money and donations do as well. This center works with, not only local youth in an area where gangs and shootings are weekly news, but students of all ages with after school programs at the area elementary, middle and high schools. CCE also works adults and other arts organizations in surrounding towns to open the minds of all organizations to different styles of dance and drumming. This is a well deserved organization and even what I have written does not begin to cover what CCE brings to the children of this community.

Our website it heartpetrescue.org and we can be reached at 919-219-1161.

We are an all volunteer animal rescue organization. We work with local shelters, individuals, and some large commercial breeders to re-home unwanted dogs and cats. We fully vet the animals, treating them not only with common preventative care, but also for more serious illnesses, such as heartworms, bladder stones, and eye injuries. We then seek the best home possible for the individual pet.

All our animals remain in our foster home system until a permanent home is found.
