Monday Motivation: Job Hunt with a Smile

Monday always gets a bad rap. The Mamas & The Papas sang about "cryin' all of the time" on Mondays, and The Boomtown Rats gave us the classic chorus "I don't like Mondays (tell me why)…" And The Bangles chimed in with "Manic Monday" back in the mid-80s.

When you're working, this day in particular can be a real drag on motivation and productivity. But when you're looking for work, it should signify a clean slate, a fresh start, a new crop of job ads to peruse, and a whole new chance to get called for an interview.

To get your Monday off to a bright start, here's a list of upbeat, potentially positive news and happenings in the world of jobs and job searching.

Employers are more flexible on work-life flexibility. The increased business pressures that come with a recession are apparently not causing employers to be inflexible with their employees' desires for better work-life balance. A survey by Work+Life Fit, Inc. found that 19% actually saw more work-life flexibility over the last year, and 66% reported no change.

Market rally helps lift executives' outlook. Buoyed by a sustained stock market rally, executive attitudes about the state of the global economy ticked up in March, according to the latest Executive Quiz by The Korn/Ferry Institute. When surveyed at the beginning of March, just 7% of executives felt the global economy was recovering. But when they were asked the same question at the end of the month, that number nearly doubled to 13%.

Looking for work? Fortune 500 firms are hiring. Here's a handful of large companies that are planning to add at least 750 new workers to their payrolls this year: Wal-Mart, Bank of America, State Farm, Boeing, MetLife, UPS, Lowe's, Johnson Controls, Comcast, Northrop Grumman, New York Life, and General Dynamics.

Time to buff up that resume!
