I nominate MABTR, Mid America Boston Terrier Rescue. Jennifer Misfeldt started this rescue and besides having a full time job she has worked tiresley finding forever homes for these dogs who have no one. The puppy mills keep hundreds of rescue groups busy finding homes for all of their unwanted dogs. Her rescue has grown triple in the past years to include many surrounding states. She has helped find home for almost 300 unwanted dogs just this year. It is so satisfiying to see a dog come to you sick and scared and sad and then with time and lots of patience and love they begin to bloom before your eyes. It is people like Jennifer that give these animals a chance at a new life.

This is a nationwide organization that helps those in need, from the soon to be homeless, to single, working mothers with children that cannot afford health or day care. They have helped me, and I immediately gave back to them when I was able to financially do so. Even if this doesn't win the contest, you owe it to yourselves to check out their website. They only help those that truly need the assistance, and make sure that all the needs are taken care of. Their source of funding the needy is all through donations

Adopt A Dog has been rescuing and sheltering pets since 1981, due to the financial times we are in the shelter is operating on fumes! They need, and most of all deserve any considerations as they tenderly care for the abused and unwanted 30 dogs and 25 cats in their humble facility. When Hurricane Katrina struck they were first in line to take in several rescued pets, rehabilitate them and place them in safe, responsible homes... Please check out what they do 24/7, 365 days a year since 1981... Thank you! Franchesca Biondo Volunteer...

What the charity benefits: Serving Israel's farmers. The often overlooked small independent farmer in Israel is helped by this charity through a team of volunteers who support them by traveling to Israel and tending the fields, assisting with related needs, and donations. Volunteers sometimes spend months at a time helping these farmers whose lives are under the threat of attack by terrorists. Friends of volunteers had a son almost die less than a year ago when a bomb was sent to the house as a purim gift. More on that story can be found in articles such as the one at this address: http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull&cid=1209627041251
Mr. Tommy Waller, the founder of HaYovel, and his family, have been a strong support for Amiel "Ami" Ortiz as he recovers. Thank you.

Each year our organization, the Kalamazoo Chapter of the International Association of Administrative Professionals, supports a community organization. This year we have adopted the Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes. Established as a collaboration of 20 churches each operating independently, the KLF was founded in 1982 to be the central access point for hungry individuals and families seeking emergency food supplies. During the early years they served 600 households a month. Over the first half of 2008 they have provided food sources to over 500 households a day during the last two weeks of each month. KLF distributes more than 1 million pounds of food through the Grocery Pantry Program, Meal Support Program, Supplelmental Food Program, and the Weekend Food Pack Program.
Visit their website at http://www.kzoolf.org.
The need becomes greater than ever now as more people in our community are losing their jobs. In November of this year our organization gave close to 300 lbs of food to KLF. Our food collections are on-going. We plan to give a food donation in February and June of 2009. Because this organization is vital to our community they should be the organization that receives the $250 you are giving away!
In the 1980s I talked with Coach Jim Valvano almost everyday as he filed his daily radio show. He was a man whose personality filled the room. We can honor him by supporting cancer research.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Forsyth County. 107 Westgate Avenue, Winston-Salem, NC 27101. Website: www.bcbsnc.org Telephone #336-724-7993.
This wonderful organization could certainly use this donation. A well established organization who matches "bigs" with children who need a caring adult in their lives. These children because of circumstances beyond their control needs all the help they can get. A little sister I worked with a few years back lived with her 80 year old grandfather along with two brothers. Their mother had been murdered by their father, who was serving life in jail. She was so appreciative of the time we spent together. Please give other children a chance.
I would like to nominate Feeding America's Hungry Children's (FAHC) network of more than 17 regional food banks and food-rescue organizations serves 16 states by distributing food and grocery products to approximately 100 local charitable hunger relief agencies including food pantries, soup kitchens, women's shelters, Community Kitchens, and other organizations that provide emergency food assistance. FAHC solicits donated food and grocery products from the nation's food and grocery industry and distributes it to hungry people across America. FAHC provided services to 13 member agencies in 8 States throughout America. These agencies were the recipients of 1,944,753 pounds of food, and yet this charity is actually a smaller charity, they just happen to be extremely efficient. Though many other charities are out there and no doubt valuable, children need to have food in their mouths before toys under the tree. That's the hope of living.
Thanks.
I would like to nominate the Cancer Institute at Swedish Medical Center. My friend Lyn and her husband Paul received wonderful care and support from the doctors, nurses and staff, especially Dr. Ren. My friend Lyn recently passed away and in honor of her I would like to again nominate the Cancer Institute at Swedish Medical Center.
THE WELLNESS COMMUNITY provides support, education and hope to people with cancer and their loved ones. It was with the support of the San Francisco Bay Area location of this National organization that I am surviving and thriving today. Their support helped me manage my cancer treatment and recover as effectively as possible. As one door closes and I await another to open.......I trust and am stong to enjoy the journey of my present job search. Thank You to The Wellnes Community and to Pongo.
The Aneurysm and AVM Foundation (TAAF)
www.TAAFonline.org
The mission is to support those affected by brain aneurysms and other vascular malformations of the brain. It is estimated 2 million americans are walking around with a brain aneurysm and have no idea. If it bursts, there is a 50% chance of death. I lost someone very close to me. But I now know many people who have better stories. Including 1 person who survived with 5 aneurysms, and another who survived 2 burst aneurysms.
It’s so important that people learn more about the disease, learn the warning symptoms and what to do.
I would like a donation to
American Cancer Society
www.americancancersociety.org
This would be in honor of my late husband, John Bruck, who is deeply missed since he lost his battle with cancer.
I have worked on behalf of Kids in Distress for many years now. They are a wonderful group that is there to care for children that are victims of domestic violence. These helpless kids come to them with little, if anything, more than the clothes on their backs. They are hurt, frightened, and traumatized, but the family-like atmosphere at the Kids in Distress centers help them feel secure and loved. The many volunteers are warm, generous people that give freely of their time and hearts. The funding gives the kids clothing, food, shelter, and sometimes even a possession or two they can call their own. So many thanks to Kids in Distress.

I would like to offer a wonderful animal sanctuary in Utah that is a total no-kill rescue for all types of animals. Even animals that are not suitable for adoption for whatever reason. They rescued several dogs from the Michael Vick cruelty case. It is setting the example for rescue facilities all over the US. Truly dedicated to loving care for so many beautifully spirited animals. It is a very deserving non profit charity.
I am picking Pathways To Your Future, Inc for my favorite charity. Mr. Gerald Thompson, started this organization while still in his 6th month of sobriety in 1989. His organization entails mentoring, counseling, housing, education, and he has just recently leased a new property which I know he could truly used the money!! Mr. Thompson works with young adults ages 18-25 who have come from broken homes and have know way of knowing how to deal with life on life terms. So, he now has this organization and his faithful employees to help him accomplish his dream. This is a non-profit organization and he deserves some type of compensation. He is a great man!!!! the phone number to reach is 323-418-8113.
Thank You, Kessha Perry
A Better World through Kindness to Animals
Best Friends Animal Society is guided by a simple philosophy: kindness to animals builds a better world for all of us.
In the late 1980s, when Best Friends was in its early days, roughly 17 million dogs and cats were being killed in shelters every year. Despite the commitment of shelter workers to the animals in their care, the conventional belief was that little could be done to lower that terrible number.
Best Friends' No More Homeless Pets campaign created a new vision: A grassroots effort to place dogs and cats who were considered "unadoptable" into good homes, and to reduce the number of unwanted pets through effective spay and neuter programs. Since then, the number of dogs and cats being destroyed in shelters has fallen to approximately 5 million a year. There has been much progress, but there is still much more to do.
The next phase of this work – bringing the number down to essentially zero – will take more work and some bold new initiatives. Shelters are crowded with pit bulls, dogs abandoned after being bought from pet stores, stray cats rounded up on the streets and not looking their very best when they’re brought in, and other pets abandoned or neglected.
As the flagship of a grassroots network of people and organizations that care about animals, Best Friends continues to lead the way towards this future. And that's why our purpose remains: A better world through kindness to animals.
Best Friends has taken 22 of Michael Vick's Pitbulls. Even if non of them can be rehabilitated, they will live out their lives at this sanctuary.
Best Friends is a no-kill sanctuary. All life is valuable.
We serve thoes with mental disabilities for age 8 to death. In 20 differnt sports and 27 different event year around. Thoes that get involved with us 52% will hold and maintain a job in life. If they don't less that 10% will even see a job.

I am Chair of the Board of Girl Scouts of Rhode Island, and I nominate this organization. Girl Scouts is the world’s preeminent organization dedicated solely to girls—all girls—where, in an accepting and nurturing environment, girls build character and skills for success in the real world. Girls develop qualities that will serve them all their lives, like leadership, strong values, social conscience, and conviction about their own potential and self-worth. Here in Rhode Island, we have translated that mission by establishing a special outreach program to young women whose mothers are behind bars. The girls and their mothers benefit by this program - the girls maintain contact with their mothers, and we help both the girls and their mothers work on their self-esteem.

The goal is to holistically assist refugees, immigrants, and members of their communities to be fully functioning integrated participants in society. I have worked as a volunteer at World Relief for the past two years. Many people who have experienced great trauma and suffering are given the opportunity to make a new, productive life for themselves with the assistance of World Relief and many volunteers.

I believe that those who often get overlooked, but deserve help most of all are the working poor. These people work so hard every day and are still struggling to survive. They should be rewarded for their hard work. I also believe we should help our own here in America first.
There are too many to choose from, but I will choose toysfortots.org. Kids of all ages need a little kindness at this time, plus who says Santa has to have a beard & red suit?
